Directions

  1. Preheat the oven. Preheat oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. Make the cookie dough. Combine the chocolate cake mix, eggs, and vegetable oil. Stir until a thick cookie dough forms.

  3. Shape the cookies. Scoop the dough into about 18 balls and place them approximately 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheet. Gently flatten each one slightly.

  4. Bake. Bake for 9–11 minutes, until the edges are set but the centers are still soft.

  5. Add the spider bodies. Let the cookies cool for about 3–5 minutes, then gently press one upside-down miniature Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup into the center of each warm cookie.

  6. Cool completely. Transfer the cookies to a cooling rack and allow them to cool completely before decorating.

  7. Make the spider legs. Use a small amount of melted chocolate to attach 4 pieces of black shoestring licorice to each side of the peanut butter cup, making 8 legs total.

  8. Add the eyes. Use a tiny dab of melted chocolate to attach 2 candy eyes to the front of each peanut butter cup.

  9. Let them set. Allow the chocolate to harden completely before moving or stacking the cookies.

  10. Serve and enjoy! Arrange your adorable Spider Cookies on a platter and watch them disappear. 🕷️🍪🎃

🥶 STORAGE

Room Temperature: Store Spider Cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days.

Layer Carefully: Place parchment or wax paper between layers so the spider decorations don't get damaged.

Refrigerator: Refrigeration isn't necessary, but you can refrigerate them for up to 1 week. Let them come to room temperature before serving.

Freezing: For best results, freeze the undecorated chocolate cookies for up to 3 months. Thaw completely before adding the peanut butter cups, legs, and candy eyes.

Make Ahead: Bake the cookies 1–2 days ahead, then decorate them closer to serving time so your little spiders look their best. 🕷️🍪

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I make Spider Cookies ahead of time?

  • Yes! Bake the cookies 1–2 days ahead and decorate them closer to serving time for the best appearance.

  • Can I use a different candy instead of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups?

  • Yes! Any small, round chocolate candy that can create the spider’s body will work.

  • What can I use instead of black licorice for the spider legs?

  • You can pipe the legs directly onto the cookies with melted chocolate if you don’t want to use licorice.

  • How do I keep the peanut butter cups from melting?

  • Let the cookies cool for about 3–5 minutes before gently pressing the peanut butter cups into the centers. The cookies should be warm enough to hold them without completely melting the chocolate.

  • How do I make sure each spider has eight legs?

  • Add four legs to each side of the peanut butter cup before attaching the candy eyes. Working one spider at a time makes it much easier to keep count. 🕷️
