Instant Pot Tips & Tricks Are you a proud new owner of an Instant Pot, or have you been using this versatile kitchen appliance for a while? No matter your level of experience, you've come to the right place. Our comprehensive guide is here to help you navigate the world of Instant Pot cooking with confidence and creativity. Instant Pot Water Test Performing a water test is a great way to familiarize yourself with your new Instant Pot and ensure it's functioning properly before you start cooking actual recipes. Here's how to set up and do the water test: Step 1: Unboxing and Preparing Unbox your new Instant Pot and ensure all components are present. Wash the inner pot, sealing ring, and other removable parts with warm soapy water and dry them. Place the inner pot back into the Instant Pot base. Step 2: Adding Water Pour 3 cups of water into the clean inner pot. This amount of water is typically recommended for the water test. Step 3: Sealing the Lid Ensure the float valve (metal pin) on the lid moves freely. Place the lid on the Instant Pot and turn it clockwise until it locks into place. Make sure the steam release valve is in the "Sealing" position. Step 4: Running the Water Test Plug in your Instant Pot and press the "Pressure Cook" or "Manual" button, depending on your model. The display will show the default time, but this doesn't matter for the water test. Use the "+" or "-" buttons to set the cooking time to 0 minutes. The Instant Pot will take a few moments to build up pressure. You might hear a few clicks as it seals and pressurizes. Once pressurized, the cooking process will start, and the display will show the countdown from 0 minutes. After a few seconds, you'll hear a beep, and the Instant Pot display will switch to "Keep Warm" mode. This means the water test is complete. Step 5: Releasing Pressure Allow the Instant Pot to release pressure naturally for about 10-15 minutes. The float valve will drop when the pressure has been released. You can also perform a quick release by carefully turning the steam release valve to the "Venting" position using a long utensil. Steam will be released quickly. Step 6: Opening the Lid Once the pressure is fully released and the float valve has dropped, you can open the lid. Carefully remove the inner pot with oven mitts or pot holders, as it might be hot. Congratulations! You've completed the water test. This process helps you understand the basics of using your Instant Pot and ensures that it's working correctly. After the water test, you can proceed to cook a variety of dishes using the different functions of your Instant Pot. Thank you so much for supporting my site Instant Pot FAQs 1. Some may have additional cooking programs, like cake baking or sterilizing, while others might come with more advanced controls. Choose a model based on your cooking needs. 9. How do I release pressure from the Instant Pot? There are two main methods for releasing pressure: natural release and quick release. Natural release involves letting the pressure drop on its own after cooking, which can take some time. Quick release involves manually turning the pressure release valve to release steam rapidly. 10. Can I make yogurt in an Instant Pot? Yes, many Instant Pot models come with a yogurt-making function. You can follow the manufacturer's instructions or find recipes online for making yogurt using your Instant Pot. Thank you so much for supporting my site Here are some Instant Pot tips and tricks to help you get the most out of your cooking experience: 1. Read the Manual: Start by thoroughly reading the user manual that comes with your Instant Pot. It will provide specific instructions and safety guidelines for your model. 2. Practice the Water Test: Perform the water test as mentioned earlier. This helps you become familiar with the Instant Pot's basic operation and ensures it's functioning correctly. 3. Sauté Before Pressure Cooking: Utilize the "Sauté" function to brown meat or sauté vegetables before pressure cooking. This enhances flavors and texture. 4. Layer Ingredients Properly: Layer ingredients with the ones that require more cooking time at the bottom. This ensures even cooking throughout your dish. 5. Use Proper Liquid Ratios: Always follow recommended liquid ratios for different types of food. Generally, 1-1.5 cups of liquid are sufficient for pressure cooking. 6. Use Natural Release for Delicate Foods: For delicate foods like rice and certain vegetables, use the natural release method to prevent overcooking. 7. Try Pot-in-Pot Cooking: Pot-in-pot cooking involves placing a smaller container inside the Instant Pot's inner pot to cook foods separately, such as rice and curry simultaneously. 8. Invest in Accessories : Consider getting accessories like a steamer basket , egg rack , or silicone molds to expand your cooking capabilities. 9. Understand Quick Release and Natural Release: Quick release (QR) involves manually turning the steam release valve to release pressure rapidly. Natural release (NR) allows pressure to drop naturally without manually releasing steam. Use QR for foods that might overcook with NR, and use NR for delicate foods. 10. Don't Overfill: Do not fill the Instant Pot above the indicated "Max" line to prevent spillover during cooking. 11. Deglaze for Flavor: After sautéing, deglaze the pot by adding a bit of liquid (broth, wine, etc.) and scraping up any browned bits from the bottom. This adds flavor to your dishes. 12. Use High-Quality Seal: Ensure the sealing ring is properly inserted and clean. Consider having a separate sealing ring for sweet and savory dishes to prevent flavor transfer. 13. Experiment with Cooking Times: Adjust cooking times based on your preference and altitude. You might need to increase or decrease times slightly. 14. Be Patient with Pressurization: It takes time for the Instant Pot to reach full pressure. The display will show "On" during this process. 15. Make Use of Pre-Programmed Settings: Different Instant Pot models have pre-programmed settings like rice, soup, and more. Utilize these settings for convenience. 16. Keep the Lid and Valve Clean: Regularly clean the lid components and steam release valve to ensure proper functioning. Thank you so much for supporting my site Instant Pot Beginner Recipes 1. We understood it because we were long time preppers who were prepared, (or so we thought.) We never imagined of all things running out of toilet paper, or aluminum foil, but those are some of the things we hadn't prepped. Freezer bags were another, but I've been canning for years so those didn't really bother me. We were pretty stocked up on the rest. How we prep is not by going to the store and wiping the isles clean (lol) but for years we have bought extra of pantry items and non- perishables . It adds up fast. If we needed Garlic Salt we bought 4 (put 2 up and used 2) when I got low on one of the two I used, I would buy 4 more. Then I ended up with 4 in stock. Spices and things don't go bad for a long time if stored right. We bought a food saver and the Jar Sealing kit so we could seal our mason jars (air tight) that way we could seal our spices after each use. (it's easy) Learn how to can, it's not as scary as you might think, and with the presto canning pressure cooker , it's a whole lot easier. It will come in handy if your freezer ever goes out too! There are tons of canning recipes, and if you take them step by step , you should be fine. I also have the 8 qt and 3 qt Instant Pot. (Great for canning small jars of jams and jellies.) YouTube is great for teaching you everything you ever wanted to know about canning and prepping, and it's one of those skills that will not only save you a ton of money, but it's something you can pass down to your own kids. (So that they know how) Let's face it, the world is only getting worse, and knowing you are one step ahead is not only comforting it's a survival skill, that will be a valuable tool for the rest of your life. Storing Water (FEMA) recommends storing tap water in clean plastic, glass, enameled metal, or fiberglass containers. Once you have filled the container, it should be tightly sealed and stored in a dark, cool place. Every six months you need to replace water. Bottled water will last indefinitely. If you buy bottled water , buy 1 or 2 extra a week and store them. Until you have enough for 3 to 6 months. The water itself will last indefinitely if kept in a cool dark area, however we all need to keep in mind, that this may not remain potable (drinking) due to plastic break down. It is best to store in glass containers, it is always best when storing water for a long term to have chlorine tablets on hand to insure disinfecting. You can use the dispensing machines, just change out the water every six months or keep chlorine tablets on hand. What are some things you keep on hand? Take your pick and enjoy this classic dish your way! How to make Classic Southern Chicken and Dumplings in the instant Pot Begin by cutting the frozen buttermilk biscuits into quarters. Place the quartered biscuits and shredded chicken into your Instant Pot. Pour 4 cups of chicken broth into the Instant Pot, ensuring that the biscuits and chicken are covered by the broth. Set the Instant Pot to "sealing" mode, not venting. Select the "Manual" or "Pressure Cook" setting on high pressure for 8 minutes. Once the cooking time is complete, perform a quick release by carefully turning the steam release valve to venting position when the pressure valve goes down. After releasing the pressure and it's safe to do so, open the lid of the Instant Pot. Stir in the cream, sweet peas, carrots, Italian seasoning, garlic salt, and Greek seasoning. Continue to stir until the mixture reaches your desired thickness. If you prefer a thinner consistency, you can add an additional cup of chicken broth. Serve the chicken and dumplings hot, garnished with extra seasoning if desired. Thank you so much for supporting my site How to make Classic Southern Chicken and Dumplings On The Stovetop In a large pot or Dutch oven, add the 4 cups of chicken broth and bring it to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Add the shredded chicken to the simmering broth and stir to combine. Allow the chicken to heat through. While the chicken is heating, prepare the dumplings. Take the quartered frozen buttermilk biscuits and drop them into the simmering broth one at a time, stirring gently after each addition to prevent sticking. Cover the pot and let the dumplings simmer for about 10-15 minutes, or until they are cooked through and no longer doughy in the center. Stir occasionally. While the dumplings are cooking, in a separate saucepan, heat the cream over low heat. If desired, you can add 2 tablespoons of butter for added richness. When the dumplings are fully cooked and the cream is warmed, add the warmed cream to the pot, followed by the sweet peas, carrots, Italian seasoning , garlic salt, and Greek seasoning. Stir gently to combine. Continue to simmer for an additional 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together and the peas and carrots to heat through. Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed. Serve hot, and enjoy!~ Thank you so much for supporting my site Cla ssic Southern Chicken and Dumplings Tips Use High-Quality Chicken Broth: The quality of your chicken broth can greatly impact the flavor of your dish. If possible, use homemade chicken broth or a high-quality store-bought version for the best results. Season Generously: Don't be shy with your seasonings. Chicken and Dumplings benefit from well-seasoned broth and dumplings. Taste and adjust the seasonings as needed. Fresh Herbs: If you have fresh herbs on hand, consider using them to enhance the flavor. Herbs like thyme, rosemary, and parsley can add a burst of freshness to your dish. Homemade Dumplings: While frozen biscuits are convenient, making dumplings from scratch with simple ingredients like flour, baking powder, salt, and buttermilk can take your dish to the next level in terms of texture and flavor. Shredded Chicken: If you have leftover roasted or rotisserie chicken, it can be a great option for this recipe. The flavor of pre-cooked chicken can be more intense and add depth to the dish. Creamy Consistency: Adjust the amount of cream or dairy to achieve your desired level of creaminess. Some prefer a thicker, creamier texture, while others like it more broth-like. Fresh Vegetables: If you prefer fresh vegetables over canned ones, you can use them. Just chop and cook them a bit longer to ensure they're tender. Optional Extras: Feel free to customize your dish with optional extras like diced onions, celery, or bell peppers for added flavor and texture. Spice It Up: If you enjoy a little heat, add some red pepper flakes, hot sauce, or cayenne pepper to the recipe for a spicy kick. Don't Overmix Dumplings: When adding the dumplings to the broth, be gentle and avoid overmixing. Overmixing can lead to dense and tough dumplings. Let It Rest: Allow your Chicken and Dumplings to rest for a few minutes after cooking. This can help the flavors meld and the dumplings to absorb some of the delicious broth. Garnish: Garnish your finished dish with fresh herbs, grated Parmesan cheese, or a sprinkle of your favorite seasoning for an extra pop of flavor and presentation.

Creating your own cumin is a gratifying and straightforward process that allows you to experience the transformation of raw seeds into a delightful spice. The end product is a fragrant and flavorful addition to your favorite dishes, presenting a unique touch that enhances their overall taste. Making your own cumin provides a rewarding sense of accomplishment, knowing that you've crafted a spice that elevates your meals with its distinct essence. You Will Need 1.5 cups whole cumin seeds 8 tablespoons Chili Powder Thank you so much for supporting my site Directions Toasting the Cumin Seeds: Preheat a large skillet or pan over medium heat. Add the whole cumin seeds to the dry pan, spreading them in a single layer. Toast the cumin seeds gently, stirring occasionally, until they release a strong, aromatic fragrance. Be cautious not to over toast or burn them. Cooling: Transfer the toasted cumin seeds to a large flat plate or baking sheet to cool completely. Cooling ensures that the cumin retains its flavor and prevents condensation during the grinding process. Grinding: Once the cumin seeds have cooled, transfer them to a spice grinder or a heavy-duty blender. Grind the cumin seeds into a fine powder. If the batch is too large, work in smaller batches for more consistent results. Mixing with Chili Powder: In a large mixing bowl, combine the freshly ground cumin powder with the chili powder. The chili powder can be adjusted to your preferred heat level, depending on how spicy you want the blend to be. Blending (Optional): If you desire a smoother texture, blend the cumin and chili powder mixture together in the spice grinder or blender once more until fully combined. Storing: Transfer the homemade cumin and chili powder blend to airtight containers or glass jars with tight-fitting lids. Store the containers in a cool, dry, and dark place, away from direct sunlight. Labeling: Don't forget to label the containers with the date of preparation and the spiciness level for reference. Now you have a generous batch of homemade cumin and chili powder blend, perfect for adding a delightful kick to a variety of dishes. Use this aromatic and spicy mix to season meats, vegetables, soups, and stews, or experiment with it in your favorite recipes to create unique and flavorful culinary masterpieces. Enjoy! Yogurt Balsamic Vinaigrette: Combine plain Greek yogurt for a creamier and slightly tangy dressing. Avocado Balsamic Vinaigrette: Blend ripe avocado for a rich, creamy texture. Thank you so much for supporting my site How To Store Balsamic Vinaigrette Refrigeration: Balsamic vinaigrette should be stored in the refrigerator. The cold temperature helps preserve the freshness and prevents the growth of harmful bacteria. Airtight Container: Transfer the vinaigrette to an airtight container, such as a glass jar with a tight-sealing lid or a plastic container designed for liquids. Ensure that the container is clean and dry to prevent any contamination. Labeling: It's a good practice to label the container with the date you made the vinaigrette. This helps you keep track of its freshness. Avoid Light and Heat: Store the vinaigrette in the back of the refrigerator, away from direct light and heat sources, which can affect the quality and taste over time. Check for Separation: Balsamic vinaigrette may separate over time, with the oil rising to the top. This is normal. Before using, simply shake or stir the vinaigrette to re-emulsify the ingredients. Use Within a Reasonable Time: While balsamic vinaigrette can last for several weeks when refrigerated, it's best to use it within 2-4 weeks to ensure the best flavor and quality. Over time, the flavors may change, but it should remain safe to consume for a longer period. Inspect for Spoilage: If the vinaigrette develops an off smell, unusual appearance, or off flavors, it's best to discard it, as this may indicate spoilage. Remember that homemade vinaigrettes may have a shorter shelf life compared to commercially produced dressings with added preservatives. Always trust your senses (smell, taste, and appearance) to determine the freshness and safety of your stored balsamic vinaigrette.
